how has this horror escaped my critical gaze until now ?

Apparently the Boston Globe has a column wherein they set people up on blind dates, then ask them afterwards how they went.

Sometimes, Torture Does Work

The Washington Post:

After enduring the CIA’s harshest interrogation methods and spending more than a year in the agency’s secret prisons, Khalid Sheik Mohammed stood before U.S. intelligence officers in a makeshift lecture hall, leading what they called “terrorist tutorials.”…

Speaking in English, Mohammed “seemed to relish the opportunity, sometimes for hours on end, to discuss the inner workings of al-Qaeda and the group’s plans, ideology andSource: PoliGazette RSS Feed

Has Gord won the Afghan visit battle?

Mail

But will he lose the post-visit PR war?

There’s an interesting angle on Brown’s surprise trip to Afghanistan in the Mail on Sunday this morning which has all the potential to blow up into a big incident.

According to the paper the Tory leader was forced to call off a trip to the country after discovering that the PM had beaten him to it.

The report goes on: “The Tory leader scrapped his own visit – which has been in his diarySource: Political Betting RSS Feed

President Obama's eulogy for Ted Kennedy: 'To give a voice to those who were not heard'

Before President Obama delivered his eulogy for Sen. Ted Kennedy today, the right was all worked up at the prospect that he might actually use the eulogy to promote the health-care reform legislation that Kennedy himself championed (see, e.g., Laura Ingraham filling in for O'Reilly on Fox Friday night).

You could just see them licking their chops and waiting to turn the eulogy into a Paul Wellstone-funeral-like "look howSource: Crooks and Liars RSS Feed

SUBTEXT ... INNER DIALOGUE - A NEW PAGE

A new page has been created on The Peace Tree.
The latest page is, INNER DIALOGUE... It is what I imagine the subject to be thinking while they yammer on about whatever it might be that they're yammering on about...
Some probably think I should add myself to the list for an inner dialogue treatment, and I would, but my muse already says what's on my mind pretty much on a daily basis so it would be rather redundant to include myself... Mary Jo Would Say It Was Worth It

From some site calling itself Opinionista:

The Footnote Speaks: What Would Mary Jo Kopechne Have Thought of Ted’s Career?

August 27th, 2009

We’re comfortable with moral relativism in this country — or, at least, we love us a good “sinned and redeemed” narrative. And, for the most part, we realize that there are few lives on which we can slap a “Good” or “Evil” label and expect it to be accurate.

Which, let’sSource: Sweetness Light RSS Feed

Ed Show: Myth Information-- Aaron Carroll on the Health Care Reform Myths

DOWNLOADS: (1043)
PLAYS: (2798)

Ed Schultz goes through the poll numbers that show just how badly so many Americans are buying into the outright lies on health care/insurance reform that are being put out there. There needs to be a real debate about just what's actually potentially going into these bills where the public is going to end up on the short end of the stick and put at the mercy of the health insurance companies without the distraction of having to debunk this Source: Crooks and Liars RSS Feed

6th Annual Migrant Trail Announced

The Migrant Trail:
We Walk for Life
May 25-31, 2009

Our Vision:
The precarious reality of our borderlands calls us to walk. We walk together on a journey of peace to remember people, friends and family who have died, others who have crossed, and people who continue to come. We walk to bear witness to the tragedy of death and of the inhumanity in our midst. Lastly, we walk as a community, in defiance of the borders that attempt toSource: Man Eegee RSS Feed

climate wars - 3 part radio show canadian broadcast corp.

CBC | About 2 years ago I noticed that the military in various countries, and especially in the Pentagon, were beginning to take climate change seriously. Now, it's the business of the military to find new security threats. It's also in their own self-interest, since they need a constant supply of threats in order to justify their demands on the taxpayers' money, so you should always take the new threats that the soldiers discover with a grain of salt. Resurgence of credit card offers

I'm sitting here doing a little shopping online. I found a great coupon for 25% off and free shipping at Coldwater Creek, and then found some really great bargains in their online outlet. So picked up a few items and I'm ready to check out, when now I'm faced with another offer -- an additional 20 percent off if I open a Visa account with them. Since I only spent $50 today, that saves me $10. But I have to admit, I'm tempted to go back and pick up a couple of other things that I wasSource: RedStateBlues RSS Feed

Health care is hot topic for talks here in my home Illinois District Monday Afternoon

This was the local townhall meeting here in my district known as the Illinois 10th congressional yesterday that for the most part was not very newsworthy other than so many people showed up that a second one has been scheduled which I will myself attend as soon as the details are released..
The timing of the meeting was somewhat strange considering it's daytime scheduling, which obviously prevented most day working men and women from attending, and I do hope that the next one isSource: Chicagoray RSS Feed

Printed versus online in the newspaper biz

The Virginian-Pilot, the largest newspaper serving Southside Hampton Roads, has an online presence at PilotOnline. There has always been content in the newspaper that didn’t appear on the website, most notably any op-eds not internally produced. For the most part, though, over the years, more and more of the printed material appeared online.

A couple of months ago, the Pilot made the decision to no longer produce columnists online. Not only did thisSource: Vivian J. Paige RSS Feed
